It is the formal princely state of Tipperah. Tripura, had been more or less permanently at war with the neighbors when the British, taking an advantage of a feud between Maharaja Krishna Manikya and the Nawab of Bengal, intervened and established a protectorate. They also divided Tripura into a princely state and tribal land under their direct control. The population, mostly of Tibeto - Burmese origin, took up Vaishnava Hinduism early, and was ruled continuously by rajas until Indian independence. Other major ethnic groups in Tripura are the Kukis, related to the Shans of Burma, Chakmas, Moghs, Lusharis and Riangs. After independence Tripura joined the Indian union in 1949 and became a state in 1972.
